10 must-have items to stay connected to your roots. Part 1

Part 1: Finding Home Away from Home

Moving to a new country can be exciting, full of opportunities and fresh beginnings. But let’s be real… it can also get lonely! That longing for home sneaks up on you in the smallest ways. For me, it’s catching the scent of familiar spices or hearing Afrobeats in the most unexpected places.

Once, I walked into a jewellery shop, and Burna Boy’s voice greeted me, blasting from the speakers., I was smiling throughout! Just as I was about to leave, Davido’s “Unavailable” came on. Come and see me breaking into moves, smiling like I owned the place. I stayed way longer than necessary, soaking in the nostalgia, pretending for a moment that the music was playing just for me.

If you’ve ever felt like that, you’ll understand the need to hold on to pieces of home. That’s why I’ve put together this list: 10 must-have items to stay connected to your roots, no matter where you are.

Item 1 : Your Spices or Ingredients

Nothing says “home” like the aroma of jollof rice (especially the crispy, burnt bottom!) or a delicious pot of Banga or Edikang Ikong soup. They say, “Food isn’t just nourishment; it’s memory on a plate.” And it’s so true.

Tip: Stock up at ethnic grocery stores or find an online supplier. I’m still searching for a proper African store near me (not the ones with substitutes that almost work). That’s why whenever I visit home, I make sure to bring back spices in bulk. And if you can’t find exactly what you need, improvise—you might just discover a new favourite! (I know I have.)

Item 2 : Traditional Attire

Whether it’s a saree, agbada, hanbok, or Ankara outfit, traditional attire feels like wrapping yourself in your roots. For me, blending cultural pieces with modern fashion is unbeatable—imagine Ankara scrunchies, bold blazers, or even chic skirts paired with everyday staples.

Tip: If you left yours behind or are looking to refresh your wardrobe, connect with a tailor or shop online. And here’s a shameless plug: I run a fashion shop called Efemena Atelier, where I specialize in Ankara attires! Whether you’re dressing for a festival, a cultural day at work, or just because, rocking traditional wear will make you stand out in the best way. (I’ll add a link so you can check it out!)

Item 3 : Music from Home

There’s something SO good about hearing familiar tunes. Whether it’s an Afrobeat banger, a Bollywood classic, or a traditional folk melody, music has a way of transporting you back.

Tip: Create a playlist of your favourite songs on Spotify or YouTube. Keep an ear out for live music events featuring artists from your home country… it’s always a vibe!

Item 4 : A Beloved Recipe Book

Food connects us to our roots like nothing else. For me, that connection lies in jollof rice, though let’s not start the Nigerian vs. Ghanaian jollof debate here! I remember years ago when my sister would call me from Canada regularly for soup recipes…now she’s an expert in all the recipes. It’s a reminder to cherish those “pinch of this” family recipes we often take for granted.

Tip: Turn family recipes into a cookbook, complete with stories behind each dish. It’s a beautiful way to preserve tradition.

Item 5 : Family Photos or Keepsakes

Sure, you’ve got hundreds of selfies on your phone, but there’s something uniquely grounding about a framed family photo or a cherished keepsake. For me, it’s a crocheted top that’s been passed down from my grandmother to my mum and now to me. When my daughter wore it recently, it brought back a flood of beautiful memories.

Tip: Create a “roots corner” in your home with family photos, mementos, and/or cultural artwork. It’s a conversation starter and a piece of history in your space.
